Skin exfoliation refers to the process of removing dead skin cells to allow newer, healthier skin cells to become more visible. While skin exfoliation is a naturally occurring process, most skin types can stand some help. As we get older, our skin renewal process slows down and often causing a flaky, dull lack-lustre complexion. This build up of dead skin cells need to be sloughed off in order to encourage cell production and improve our skin’s texture along with diminishing the appearance of fine lines. Massaging your skin can improve skin tone, eliminate the build up of toxins, boost blood circulation and promote cell renewal. Any moisturizer will perform better if massaged into freshly-exfoliated skin rather than used on layers of dead cells.
A dry brush exfoliation can be done in the morning before you shower. It improves lymph circulation and decreases puffiness, as well as stimulating the immune system. Start by standing in the shower with the water off and using a soft brush or loofa, start brushing at your feet in small circles toward your heart. Apply very light pressure, avoiding broken skin and rashes and your face. After you’ve finished both legs, move on to your arms. Brush from your fingertips, again towards your heart. Reach around and brush from your back towards your stomach. When you are finished, begin your shower.
It is usually advised that exfoliation be done no more than once a week. Any more than that could seriously irritate the skin.
